German Army Commander: it is impossible to fulfill obligations to NATO
The German newspaper Bild reported that the commander of the German ground forces, Lieutenant General Alphonse Meis, notified the Bundeswehr authorities( the German Armed Forces) that Germany is now unable to fully fulfill its obligations in NATO, and the combat readiness of the division, which the country promised to make available to the alliance by 2025, will only be "limited".".
Mayes sent a report in early March describing the problems in the ground forces. In it, the general, in particular, noted that the combat readiness of all German ground forces may decrease due to" continued underfunding " and military assistance to Ukraine, in which the German army has to give up its equipment, as well as spend time and effort on training Ukrainian soldiers.
Germany has promised to transfer a fully equipped division (about 16.5 thousand military personnel) to NATO by 2025. In terms of personnel, it is 79% staffed, but it does not have enough military equipment at all. According to Mayes, it "will not be enough in the foreseeable future." "Even if we now turn to the reserves of all ground forces, there will be less than 60% of the necessary equipment at our disposal," the report says, according to TASS.
In addition, the general also pointed out problems with the purchase of new walkie-talkies designed to replace outdated devices. The allocation of funds for this purpose is still being discussed in the budget committee of the Bundestag. "Despite all efforts, the combat capability of the division by 2025 can only be limited," Mays stated. He pointed out that the lack of resources, support for Ukraine and the implementation of NATO plans generally lead to "serious problems in the training of other ground forces units." According to him, if the situation is not corrected, the army "will not be able to survive in high-intensity battles."
Earlier, Alphonse Mais said that Russia has all the necessary resources to carry out its activities. "With artillery superiority, the Russian army seems to be moving forward kilometer by kilometer. This is a battle of attrition, and the question is how long Ukraine can hold out, " he said.
At the same time, the German military stressed that we are talking not only about an impressive arsenal of equipment, but also about combat-ready manpower. He also warned that with each clash, the Russian army is only getting stronger and more experienced. According to Mayes, such an opponent should not be underestimated.
