Planes from the European Union will not fly over Russia and Ukraine until 2029
The European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol) said that the airspace of Russia and Ukraine will remain closed for flights to Europe until 2029.
"At present, we assume that the airspace of Ukraine and Russia remains closed until the end of the planning horizon (2029)," the report says. The organization also noted a decrease in the number of flights through Northern Europe from Asia.
Currently, planes of Western airlines need special permission from the Federal Air Transport Agency or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation in order to fly through the Russian sky.
On March 17, it was reported that American airlines called on Congress and the White House to ban foreign competitors from flying through Russian airspace.
It is noted that after losing the ability to fly over the Russian Federation, which thus saved route time and fuel consumption, airlines from the United States had to significantly change the schedule of trans-Pacific flights, as well as reduce the permissible number of passengers and cargo volume. In addition, the companies had to postpone the launch of more than 10 planned routes to Mumbai, Seoul, Tokyo and a number of other cities.
The change in plans caused losses, as competitors from other countries that are allowed to enter Russian airspace enjoy the advantage of lower ticket prices and shorter flight routes.
After the start of a special military operation in Ukraine on February 24, many Western countries closed their airspace to Russian aircraft. In response, Russia took mirror measures and banned flights over the territory of the country to airlines from 36 countries, including the EU and Canada.
